It's not immediately obvious to the casual observer, but that three-day crisis was a dress rehearsal for a much larger threat now being flagged by the International Monetary Fund.
At first glance, the tokenization narrative glitters with promise. BlackRock's BUIDL fund, launched in March 2024, has amassed $2.4 billion in tokenized Treasury bonds, settling trades on-chain in seconds. Ondo Finance, a protocol backed by traditional finance titans, manages over $600 million in tokenized assets. The broader market for tokenized real-world assets (RWA) now sits at roughly $32 billion, and the dream holds that every bond, stock, and real estate deed will one day live on a shared ledger, slashing costs and opening access to billions. Larry Fink, BlackRock's CEO, has declared that every asset will be tokenized. The market believes him.

But beneath the surface, the reality is colder. A deeper look reveals a market that is eerily quiet. The IMF's recent Financial Stability Report, released in April 2026, delivers a stark counterpoint to the hype: tokenization does not eliminate risk—it shifts it. And that shift, from human-intermediated institutions to automated, immutable code, creates a new class of instant contagion risk that traditional finance has no tools to handle. The IMF warns that regulators must extend oversight “beyond institutions to the code that governs transactions.” This is not a call for more KYC; it is a call to scrutinize the very algorithms that determine when your assets are frozen, liquidated, or transferred.
The core insight is unsettling. Traditional financial settlement systems, like the T+2 cycle for stocks, have built-in delays. Those delays are not inefficiencies—they are safety buffers. A bank run in the 1930s could take days; the Federal Reserve could step in. In a tokenized world, settlement is instantaneous. A run on a tokenized money-market fund could drain billions in minutes, with no human circuit breaker. The IMF explicitly flags this: “The speed of automated execution could amplify systemic stress during volatile periods.” They are not wrong.

In 2022, a user on a major tokenization platform accidentally transferred tokens to the wrong address. The platform could reverse the transaction only by convincing the contract's multisig signers—a group of anonymous developers—to censor the transfer. They did, but only after intense community pressure. What happens when the contract is immutable and no multisig exists? The asset is gone forever.
The data whispers a different story. The $32 billion tokenized RWA market is dominated by stablecoins (roughly $300 billion) and a handful of tokenized Treasury products. The secondary market for most tokenized assets is virtually non-existent. Many tokenized bonds trade fewer than ten times per week. This is not a liquid market; it is a storage mechanism. The first person to try to redeem a large position could discover that there is no buyer on the other side—only the smart contract's automated redemption process, which may require a full audit before releasing funds. That delay, in a panic, would be catastrophic.
The IMF's most provocative argument is the extension of “too big to fail” to smart contracts. If a specific tokenization protocol becomes the dominant infrastructure for, say, U.S. Treasury settlement, its code becomes systemically important. A bug in that code could freeze trillions in assets. Who is responsible? The developer team? The DAO? The chain validators? There is no mechanism for a government to bail out a smart contract. The IMF suggests that regulators might need to pre-approve such contracts, effectively requiring a license to run critical financial infrastructure on a blockchain.
This is where the contrarian angle bites. The prevailing narrative in crypto is that tokenization is inevitable progress—faster, cheaper, more inclusive. But the same speed that enables instant settlement enables instant bank runs. The same permissionless access that allows a Nigerian farmer to buy tokenized Treasuries also allows a North Korean hacker to drain them. The same composability that lets DeFi protocols borrow tokenized assets also creates unknown feedback loops that no one has stress-tested.

Consider the stablecoin duopoly. USDT, the largest stablecoin, is being delisted from European exchanges due to MiCA regulations. USDC, more compliant, is gaining share. But USDC's de-peg in 2023 proved that compliance does not eliminate reserve risk. The risk simply moves from the bank to the stablecoin issuer. In traditional finance, trust is placed in regulated institutions with accountability. In tokenized finance, trust is placed in the developers who wrote the code, the auditors who reviewed it, and the oracle providers who feed it data.
